Crazy Beliefs OK, Rationality Suspect

Atheists identified as America's most distrusted minority

Americans' increasing acceptance of religious diversity doesn't extend to those who don't believe in a god, according to a national survey by researchers in the University of Minnesota's department of sociology.

Money can buy happiness

Pew Research Center: Are We Happy Yet?

The correlation between happiness and family income is very strong indeed - reported happiness rises in a nearly straight line through eight levels of annual family income. At the highest income category -- $150,000 and above - fully 50% of respondents report being very happy; by contrast, just 23% of those who have a family income below $20,000 say they are very happy.

Children Getting Stupider, Film at 11

Failing to teach them how to handle real life

Far from getting cleverer, our 11-year-olds are, in fact, less “intelligent” than their counterparts of 30 years ago. Or so say a team who are among Britain’s most respected education researchers.

Machines will perform euthanasia on terminally ill patients in Israel under legislation devised not to offend Jewish law, which forbids people taking human life.

[Update! Someone left a comment on jwz's blog pointing to this Feynman story.]
